Quantitative Fit Testing
Quantitative fit testing uses instrumental methods to measure the concentration of a test agent outside and inside the mask. This provides a numerical value called a fit factor. Instruments such as condensation nuclei counters (CNC) and controlled negative pressure (CNP) are commonly used.
Qualitative Fit Testing
Qualitative fit testing relies on the wearer’s sensory detection of a test agent. It uses substances like Bitrex or saccharin to detect leakage through taste. While less precise than quantitative methods, it is a quick and straightforward technique for determining fit.
Specific Parameters of Fit Testers
- Fit Factor: Quantitative fit testing results are given as fit factors. A fit factor of 100 or more is typically required for half-mask respirators, while a fit factor of 500 or more is required for full-face respirators.
- Test Agent Concentration: The test agent must remain at a specified concentration to ensure accurate test results. For CNC methods, ambient particles are measured, whereas CNP methods maintain a specific pressure.
- Duration: The testing procedure usually lasts between 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the protocol being followed. This duration ensures that various movements and exercises are accounted for in the test.
